ECF Grading and Our UK Tournament Preparation Track

The English Chess Federation uses a numerical grading system where an average club player might sit around ECF 120–140, and a strong junior might aim for ECF 160+. We understand this system thoroughly and structure our improvement plans around clear ECF grade milestones. Our UK students receive opening preparation specifically chosen for the types of positions that arise most frequently in UK club and congress games — including rapid and standard time controls.

We also prepare students for the UK Junior Chess Challenge, the British Chess Championship qualifying rounds, and local county-level competitions. What a Typical UK Student's Session Looks Like

Each 45–60 minute session is held live on Zoom. The coach and student work on a shared interactive chessboard (Lichess or Chess.com) covering the lesson topic — which might be a specific tactical theme, an opening repertoire adjustment, or an endgame technique. After each session, the student receives written notes with annotated examples and a set of homework puzzles to solve before the next class. Monthly progress reports go out to parents summarising what was covered, rating progress, and what to focus on next.
